My Media Update
Hi folks. Quick update on my life before I jump into the meat of this entry.
To start, school is well, thanks to all of you who have asked me about how I like McMaster, and if I miss Queen's. Definitely loving Mac (Attack!), and I do not miss the big Q in any way, other then a few people who I still adore. But I get to see them on certain weekends, so it's all right.
The work has returned, and this Saturday, I will be writing two essays, hopefully. A combined 2700 words, oh joy. Both are article reviews, so are fairly basic in a lot of ways, which is good, but can really limit creativity and where you can take it, which isn't that great. I'll let you know how it goes. It's nice to have mental work to do, but it sucks, because I can't watch as much television!
Work (in terms of pay work) is decent. I'm getting more shifts then I'd like, so I've been trading off a bit. I need to talk to the boss-man, and get me working two shifts a week, max. It's a pain to do two night courses, and two work night shifts a week. We'll see how that goes too.
Not much else to talk about. I keep extremely busy and in addition to the readings/work, there's a list of chores/errands I need to do. I need to find some sort of hockey team ASAP, but I fear I've left it way too late.
Also, on a different note, I don't like to get too personal about those close to me, but my mother's got her second surgery of the year tomorrow (the two are unrelated, and this is far less serious, and compared to the first one, is laughable). I'm not one for giving someone a prayer, and I don't really believe much in wishing someone luck, but I'd think it was mighty cool, if everyone could tell their Mother how much they love them tomorrow, the world would be just a bit better.
Ah, that got way too real and mushy for me. Gross. I'd love to continue on with the second half being a grand essay about my thoughts, but really, life's pretty simple right now. I'm busy, which keeps me from thinking too much, and not thinking too much keeps me happy. Although it is different and strenuous at times, I wouldn't change things for the world. So here's a whole bunch of crap about the media I love!
MEDIA-tastic!
Cover Songs:
Besides the obvious cover song producers, such as Richard Cheese, and Torch (YES!), it's truly amazing how many really cool or great cover songs exist, by popular artists, that I (or maybe you might enjoy). I've downloaded a bunch recently, including the five in my soundtrack (and a lot more), and all are amazing. I love when a good band takes a great song, and turns it into something completely different, but still amazing. There's a real art to it, as so many cover songs truly suck, and in some ways, cast a bad shadow on the original (anything involving the words "Nu" and "Metal" comes to mind), but when done right, I can enjoy a cover song on so many levels.
If you're interested in acquiring any good cover songs, I suggest the website listed bellow, Hype Machine, which is a great tool for staying on top of the new songs MP3 blogs toss up, and gives you easy access to the song (in numerous formats). It's fully searchable, and is a great way to grab a single song without using a messy p2p tool.
The Hype Machine!
I suggest anything by Ted Leo (Since U Been Gone is amazing), Thrice - Eleanor Rigby, anything in my soundtrack, and the entire BBC Radio 1 series. Check it out people!
Toronto King of the Death Matches!
I've pretty much gotten completely out of the wrestling stuff, aside from internet gossip, occasional live shows, and, of course, the Godliness that is ISW, but something recently caught my eye:
Stranglehold Wrestling Presents: The Canadian KOTDM Tournament! Poster!~
It's on Sunday afternoon, on October 29th, and should be crazy. For those not in the know, Death matches are wrestling that are hyper-violent, and can use anything from chairs to light tubes to barbed wire to ladders to lobsters to glass, to anything. It's insanely crazy, insanely painful, and really bloody. It's the sport of kings in this modern crazy age. It's at the Opera House, and booze will be sold I believe, meaning people can get drunk and see people hit in the face with light tubes. Who doesn't want that?
Who wants to go? I'm going, even if I go alone, and I'm sure Eli will want to come. Lemme know now, and I'll order tickets online, and get good seats.
The Necro Butcher (basically, he's Jesus!) is there, and that's a rarity in Ontario. Chance of a lifetime suckers!
Jackass 2 and Thank You For Smoking!
I pulled a double header yesterday, seeing a movie in theaters, and at home. First I caught Jackass: Number 2, with my family (my mom, dad, and brother... I have an odd but great family dynamic), and it was great. They totally out did the first movie, the show, and all the various other spin-offs. Bam really took a lot this movie, which shocks me, as normally Bams' a prick and makes other people take the abuse. The movie is funnier, slicker, faster, crazier, and better in every way then the first one. If you like the Jackass stuff (and if you don't, go read the New Yorker, and drink your fancy wines!), you'll love this, and it's a must see.
To cleanse the palette (so to speak), I watched Thank You For Smoking last night, at home. It's a great comedy, and really under looked from last year. It's brilliantly cast (Aaron Eckhart, Katie Holmes, David Koechner, Adam Brody, Robert Duvall and many more), and really well written. It's super slick, goes at an intense speed, and never deviates from being awesome. It's smart and hilarious, which is rare in today's society.
Music!
It's the third peak for new music (first being early in the year, I'd say mid Jan to Mid March, the second being early summer, so about may until mid July, and this current one is September to Mid-November or so, for the Christmas season), so there's been a slew of new releases out or coming out. To name a few:
- Sparta - Threes (Awesome, their best album, and Erase it Again is a great tune)
- Senses Fail - Still Standing (Good, but not as good as Let It Enfold You, yet).
- Scissor Sisters - Ta-Dah! (Probably the gayest music ever, but I love it).
- Saosin - Self-titled (Worth the wait, it was amazing).
Plus a butt load more from new bands, and older personal favorites.
PLUS, the most anticipated (by me, at least) is still to come, with the Killers - Sam's Town, scheduled to drop in a mere week. I cannot wait for this one, I'm bursting at the seams.
In a blatant reference to Meg's entry, "I think I just had a mediagasm, in my mouth!"
Jesse.
PS: Sorry, but that was the best entry to any LJ ever Meg. So brazen, so strong, so perfect.
